I've currently been working on developing a new website, PomsToYou.com where we can ship our Pomegranates and Pomegranate Products directly to customers, anywhere in the United States. Its still being developed but check it from time to time and see the progress. No products will be listed until next Fall, but trying to get it finished, with all the kinks worked out in the ordering system before it is launched.

Lot of birds here now, countless number of ducks with a steady number of Geese coming in daily. Been feeding twice daily now, they consume a whole lot of food.

Garden is ready for planting when the time comes. Going to section it off in two, so we can grow only two items in bulk to supply the local area Whole Food's stores aswell as sell the produce at our road side stand and area Farmer's Markets.

Come Spring time, we're going to have a whole lot of planting to do. The new Pomegranate Orchard that is unplanted can hold a good 550 or so trees, with various areas around the property to be able to fit in another 500 or so.

Its about 11:30 AM right now, and its warmed up to a nice 55. I expect it to be near 70 today, so maybe I will get around to shooting some new photos.

Basically we worked a lot, tried to enjoy our time away from the Orchard. Had a couple extravagant dinners with some really wealthy individuals and tried to relax. It was a nice week away from the desert, but I didn't want to stay gone too long.

Had to wake up at 4AM, take the boss to the airport by 6. Had a early morning start in Vegas, so decided to find a skatepark before it got hot. All before 10AM:

Not quite a accurate representation of the day-to-day life of living out here on the Orchard, I don't get to ride my bike nearly as much as I would like but I suppose there are more important things. Preparing for planting new trees soon, and have work cut out for us for the next month or so.

Returning to New Mexico for a weekend in October for a meeting, looking forward to going back to Truchas for a couple days.

Moving to New Mexico in the morning.

I found out just earlier tonight. Well, it was my decision to move so quickly but I will be headed out in the morning.

I'll be working for the same guy, but living / working there helping to book a resort that he owns. I'm needed out there more than I am needed here in Nevada at this time. Its a better paying job, and i'll make a nice living out there. Details and photos when I get out there. I get to cross the Hoover Dam, pass through Flagstaff (well drive all the way through Arizona) and go to Alberqurque then head directly north to 8,300FT into the mountains. Should be able to capture some good photos.

Will return to Nevada from time to time for various stuff.

FAMILY: I'll call you when I get settled in. I will be driving 11+ hours tomorrow with a dog in the truck and trying to look at a map when i'm in the cities, so i'd rather not talk on the phone. I'll call you and give you updates on the way as I can.

Living the life right now, love it. Very excited about the move. On the bright side, I'm a little closer to home.

Tomorrow I have to irrigate during the day, with an expected high of 112... Its supposed to be 110+ everyday for the rest of the month at this point. This is why I carry a book bag on me with a 64oz water bladder inside, with a hose connected to it that I can drink out of while working, a goofy looking hat that keeps the sun off my face and shoulders, and sun screen. Looking forward to Winter, with highs in the 70's and 80's!

It's still not as bad as a 95 degree day in Indiana, where it has rained the night before with 70% humidity in the air. But I generally stay out of the sun during the peak of the day, which is basically any time after 11AM until its dark, even so its over a 100 degrees for a few hours after dark.

Went on vacation two weeks ago to visit home, took a lot of photos while I was there.

I've been really slacking on keeping this updated, its been a chore more or less. I think I promised my family I would have photos up tonight or tomorrow, but it looks like it will be tomorrow sometime.

Things are good out here, I'm currently the only one running the show at the moment. Business partner / room mate Nick decided to bail out on no notice. I hope he finds whatever it is he is looking for back home. Meanwhile, a new addition will be added in August when long time friend and new business partner Curt (Not to be confused with myself, Curtis) comes to join the adventure. I think with his help we'll have a successful Pomegranate harvest this fall.

The heat hasn't been too bad for me yet. Its been 105+ every day for the last few weeks or so. I get most my labor intensive work done by 10AM anyhow, come inside, eat lunch, nap for a few hours, and do work online. I'll go water the garden about the time the sun starts to go down, which doesn't take too long. Thirty minutes or so to do a good over head watering, then i'll turn the drip system on for a few hours and go back out and turn it off. Simple enough. Even at night though, its 100 or so out. Right now its 11:30 almost, and the temperature is 98 degrees. It will cool down to the low 80's or so by morning, but things heat up quickly.

Anyways, I'll post photos soon enough. I've just been concentrating on other things then keeping this blog up to date.

21st Birthday in Vegas

Before we headed into Vegas to celebrate my 21st Birthday, we stopped near The Valley of Fire National park for a quick hike. We checked out that cave, and then went to the top.

With no actual plan, we just decided it would be best to just walk around. Let the fun find us, rather than us find the fun. While walking, a homeless man told us he was going to check out this free live band, so we decided that would be a good place to start the night.... It was under this giant structure with a video ceiling, here are a few more photos of that area:

I had to work the next morning, at 7AM so the night was ended early before we were able to actually explore most of Vegas, but its only 60 miles away so there will be more trips in the future.

Thats just a small portion of the garden. There are 20, 16X4 garden beds in that enclosed, protected structure. Those are just some of the beds that were planted first, hence the most growth.

We have a lot of Pigeons now. Four white Pigeons, that stay in the garden, and about 20 other types that stay in the chicken coop. We acquired them all for free, from some Mormon dude who was moving out of town.

All the mulberries are coming on nicely, just this week we've noticed some nice purple edible ones on the trees near the driveway, but now they're literally everywhere. The Hawaiian Mulberries are coming on a little later than the rest, but the few I have seen ripe I ate immediately, and the taste is sweeter than that of the regular ones.

Aside from that, everything else is coming on nicely.

We've been taking it kind of easy this past week. Ben has been in New Mexico for four days, and Nick's main work has consisted of the irrigation, which we've been getting more water since the Sand Factory near our property is suffering due to the economy, and they have the largest water share in the Valley. So, when they have excess water its basically a "free for all", as to who gets to use it, but we're pretty on top of things and get first dibs until there is a published and followed water schedule. Everyone in the valley, depending on how many shares of water they have, gets an allotted amount of time to irrigate their yard, farm, or whatever.

Aside from that we've done odd jobs around the place. Spread some mulch in some places, took out some invasive willow trees, and miscellaneous other things. We still have some work to do this week, but its nothing too bad.

I've been doing soil samples here, trying to find an area of the property that has decent clay content in it to mold some adobe bricks to make a walkway through the garden with, but have had no luck. The soil, at least in the areas I've done samples, is about 85%+ sand. Looking for about 70% sand to 30% clay. So in the mean time, i'll work on making forms and making an area that bricks can cure in the sun.

Pomegranate Bonanza

The newly developed pomegranate orchard has been irrigated, and now planted. Yesterday, the three of us planted about 200 trees in the new orchard, and still have about 200 more to plant elsewhere on the property. The work consist of gathering cuttings from the already developed trees here, cutting those to desired lengths, applying a root hormone to the ends, and putting them in the ground at 12 feet intervals. Pretty easy work, just tiresome if done in the middle of the afternoon heat (yesterday was 85+/-)

Overall, things are happening at a steady pace. The garden is taking off, and the rest of the orchard is doing just fine. A lot of work got done over the weekend, and we have our work lined out for the next week or so. It basically consist of cleaning out to the best of our ability a pipe that leads from the Pond 1 Box to the Triangle (Southern most tip of the property), so we can get more pressure down there to water that area. Also, doing work on the Fish and Game's section of land that borders the property here. Not much is needed there, but we have some trees planted over there that haven't received water since last summer. Someone decided to drive a tractor through there, destroying the irrigation ditches and leaving tire ruts everywhere. This left no path for the water to flow, so when we turned it on over the weekend it just became a giant muddy marsh over there. But, probably 2/3rds of the work got done over the weekend and most, if not all of the trees got much needed water. To be honest, I had no idea we were even allowed on that land. To get there, you have to go through the fence that borders our property, then through another fence that borders theirs. In between is some weird "no mans land", where I don't believe it belongs to either.

Aside from the work, we've been playing a lot of Call of Duty on xBox and i've been wandering around the land snapping photos of birds and what not. The pool should be ready for swimming very soon, looking forward to that. Plus, i'm going to try to get my belongings shipped out to me so I can ride my bike and use my computer, read my books and watch my dvds. But i've been pretty content so far without all of that.

Got a long day in today, ten hours or so. Worked in the new pomegranate orchard that is being developed. Laid out and buried pipes that will allow us to control the flow of water in that part. Due to too much mud, we did not get around to planting the new trees, but it seems as if its likely that will happen tomorrow.

We have roughly 400 new trees to plant, so I'm looking forward to see those take off and grow.

I'd type more, but I'm pretty wore out. Just a lot of fancy shovel and axe work today.

I've been here a little over a week now, beginning to get a feel for this place. My lungs are getting accustomed to this clean, high elevation air and I have a lot of things to look forward to here.

The work has been fairly simple. Its mainly self directed. There are areas of the Orchard that have been neglected more than others, and its just kind of a, "Do something positive for the orchard" mind set when it comes down to working. Lately that has consisted of maintaining, cleaning out, and deepening some of the irrigation ditches that provides this place with water. Just providing a defined path for the water to flow, adding berms where necessary and just a little bit of hard work has payed off tremendously as we've noted a massive decrease in flooding the orchard and yard this time around, as opposed to last Sunday when the water was ran. Last time was a hectic 22 hour work day for Nick, who basically ran around checking all the different valves, opening this one, closing that one, blocking this, directing the flow this way, etc. He did a great job, but due to neglect of the property in the past (from the old care taker) the water doesn't flow like it should. Basically, this time around water ran exactly where it was supposed to, with minimal problems. (Which have been noted and will be corrected by Friday, when we run more water).

It hasn't been all ditch work, though. A lot of work has gone into the garden this week as well. We have 20, 16X4ft organic garden beds enclosed in a fenced in / shade clothed area which are fed by a drip system and sprinklers. The garden structure was already created, with most beds planted when I arrived, however since then we've gotten around to planting the rest of the beds, mulching in between all the rows, spreading grass seed in between all the rows and tightened the shade cloth as the Peacocks just love to walk around on it. They're constantly peering within, wishing they could (and they would, if given the chance) to devour everything inside.

Its early in the season, but already have radishes, carrots, broccoli, different lettuce types, corn, squash, tomatoes, beats, peas, edible ground cover, perennial flowers, etc, etc all coming up. I expect to see a lot of growth these coming weeks from the garden.

I am interested in introducing some Dwarf-Cavendish Banana trees to the property. A good commercial variety that will thrive in our desert climate. It bears bunches of up to 90 bananas, all slightly shorter than what you're accustomed to in the grocery store. I'm going to do a bit more reading up on the matter, but all in all I wouldn't be surprised if some banana trees are being shipped this way in the coming month or so.

Nick and I decided to "remodel" the chicken coup. Happy chickens, make for a lot of eggs. I think that was our initial thinking. It started off with climbing on top of an unstable caged structure, removing heavy brush and throwing into the truck below. The roof has been about 60% cleared (its roughly about 24X24ft), but after a little over watering in the field bordering it, it became inaccessible with the truck. So we stopped working on the roof (where we were going to remove the brush, tighten the fence roofing, apply shade cloth and fix the raccoon trap), and concentrated on the inside. We dumped quite a few loads of the home made mulch mix inside, and learned quickly we can just leave our rakes in the shed. The chickens immediately jumped on every pile we dumped and began spreading it out, pecking through it eating on all the insects that lived within. Made for simple work. While inside, I was able to get a decent estimate on the egg count. Roughly 4 to 5 dozen eggs. We have no plans on eating them, and I've noted several birds actually caring for them so I suppose soon we will have a lot of little chicks running around.

Apparently we once had near 100 chickens, then a raccoon slaughtered most of them. We have about 20 now, give or take. One thing the three of us had talked about doing is separate them, and get some good egg producing breeds here so we can stop buying eggs. Just another step towards total self sufficiency, I suppose.

Earlier in the week we spent a day draining the pool, cleaning it, and filling it back up. Also that day, we loaded up a hot tub that was on the far side of the property just getting overgrown with. I should first fill you in on what area of the property this was at. Its over by our bee boxes, so i'm used to hearing them buzz. But while Nick and I were scrubbing the inside, Nick says to me, "Stop what you're doing and slowly get away." Right before he said that, I noticed how loud the buzzing had become. Thirty feet or so away from where we were cleaning the hot tub, live thousands and thousands of bees. Best to not bother them.

Later that day we got the John Deere out and backed a trailer up as close to the tub as possible and loaded it up. It needs minimal work, some new tubing and Ben knows how to do the rest, but all in all it cleaned up nice and will be a nice thing to have here.

Its not all work out here, though. Today I'm taking it easy. Walked around and checked the boxes this morning, seeing where water is and had been flowing, making sure our ditches and berms have held up (and they did). Made a couple mental notes of areas of the property that need some attention, and went back inside to cook some breakfast. Eggs, toast, bacon, and honey from our own bees. Pretty good way to start the day.

Only "work" done today, was moving a canoe from Pond 3, with the help of Ben, and washed it out nicely and relocated it to Pond 5 so I can row around for exercise and something to do. Pond 3 is one of our medium to large ponds, but with a thick growth on 3 sides of it. It has a large island in the middle, with growth around the edges but bare in the middle. The center island is a nice little fishing spot, but also home to about four or five geese nests. Pond 5 is similar in size, only with a very small center island and no growth immediately it. Its also visible from the house, so if I happen to be rowing around and tip, I feel as if I have a less chance of dying in this pond, haha.

Well, tomorrow my Nikon D60 should arrive and I will begin shooting photos of the place and posting them here. Aside from living on this organic orchard, its also a bird sanctuary / refuge. The peacocks follow you around, they're always curious. While operating the wood chipper the other day, I had one about three feet from me the entire time just kind of wondering why I'm making so much noise. The white geese are nice to look at, but like to get close to you and hiss while you're attempting to get their feed. The Canadian Geese mainly stick to the ponds, but they waddle around on the land and in the lagoon. They're usually on the shores of the ponds waiting to be fed in the mornings, they know whats up. The mud ducks are probably my favorite out here, but they're much too skiddish. I can never get very close to them. The turkeys always travel together, normally 10 or so at a time I'll see come up and feed. Witnessed a very exciting turket fight the other day, it was pretty intense. There are quite a few big ones, its making me look forward to Thanksgiving this year ;) Aside from that, there are Quail, just "plain ol' ducks", Herrings, etc, etc. Just a lot of birds, really.

This has become a long ramble, but I figured I'd post an update that was longer than a few lines. Will be traveling to New Mexico in the coming month to examine an adobe house owned by my employer and to further explore the possibility of starting an earthbag project here or there.

Soon I will start posting photos of the area. I'll be purchasing a Canon G10 or similar this week, and hopefully by next week i'll be able to start sharing some photos.

I'm off to Nevada tomorrow.

There, I will work and live on an organic orchard / bird refuge in the Moapa Valley region.
